Government Embarks on Establishment of National Competitiveness and Productivity Council

The changing contours of the global political economy characterised by the erosion of preferential trade arrangements; dwindling grants and aid; increased competition for foreign direct investment and donor fatigue, demand that Government maximizes the use of limited resources. The Government of Saint Lucia has commenced work on the establishment of a National Competitiveness and Productivity Council.

This is consistent with Government’s goal to ensure the efficient and proper use of available resources, increase levels of productivity, enhance national competitiveness and provide greater economic opportunity at all levels.

This can best be achieved by engendering an environment for dialogue among various sectors and broad participation at all levels of society.

The establishment of this council will assist greatly in determining equitable compensation and reward schemes, establishing scientific measurements for productivity and engendering a more meritocratic system for hiring, promotion and rewards.

The effectiveness of this National Competitiveness and Productivity Council depends largely on the extent to which stakeholders can dialogue and maximize their synergies. These stakeholders include: Government and its related institutions and agencies; the private sector; employers and managers represented by their professional associations; trade unions and other non-governmental organizations.

The Government of Saint Lucia extends an open invitation to members of the public to attend the broad consultation on the establishment of a National Competitiveness and Productivity Council, at the National Insurance Corporation’s Conference Room, 5th Floor, Francis Compton Building, on Friday, August 20th, from 8:45am.
