Saint Lucia to be VAT Ready by September 1, 2012

Value Added Tax will be implemented on September 1, 2012 as announced by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Honorable Dr. Kenny Anthony in a press conference held on Thursday March 29th, 2012. The VAT Project Implementation Project Office which was established by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2008 is mandated to prepare Saint Lucia for the successful implementation of the VAT. The Project Office under the present leadership of Ms Adria Rose Sonson will continue to engage stakeholders to ensure that they are well informed and ready to assist in the administration of the VAT.
During the coming weeks the Project Office will engage the media and general public to raise awareness VAT. A comprehensive public education campaign will be undertaken geared towards informing persons on the broad concepts of VAT and to highlight the rights and responsibilities of the final consumer and well as the business community.
The Private Sector will play a pivotal role in the administration of VAT and their efforts will go a long way in ensuring successful implementation. The Project Office will place particular emphasis on this Sector on advising on the VAT laws and the administrative requirements.
VAT will impact the lives of all Saint Lucians.The Project Office recognizes that this is a national effort and will use every opportunity to ensure that Saint Lucia is ready for VAT.
The final policies on the implementation of the VAT will be announced by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in this year's budget address, as was indicated during his press conference.
